Sewing Patience
Cutting, pinning, marking, sewing, ripping seams, re-sewing requires patience. It has a medicinal effect on my mood. It's uplifting and calming. Creating something from a piece of fabric gives me confidence. Once the project is completed, it is my own work of art, my own masterpiece. I learned the thrill of creating something from nothing when I was just 13 years old. I learned only the basic at home economics that day, so when I came home, I looked for something to sew. My mother gave me an old dress that had a fitted waist with a full skirt. The skirt alone had 2 or more yards of fabric. So I cut the skirt off at the waist, ironed it flat, and began to pin, mark, cut and sew my new dress. Of course, my mother was astonished. I was so thrilled that I could make something from nothing. I proudly wore my finished project the next day to school.
